The increasingly valuable cycle tourism market will be the focus of Venture Southland's domestic visitor campaign in October.
Southland is a high profile cycling region with the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome, November’s annual Tour of Southland, and the soon to be completed Around the Mountains Cycle Trail among its attractions.
"Southlanders are also big cyclists, with Southland having the second largest proportion of recreational cyclists in New Zealand."
Cycle tourism was increasing among domestic and international visitors, the report says.
The objectives of the campaign are to increase awareness of Southland and Fiordland as top quality cycling destinations.
Three segments of the cycling market have been identified as key focuses – these being middle-aged couples, families and males in their 20s.
With a focus on promoting cycle-based current and new products to the domestic market, this campaign aims to stimulate both locals and New Zealanders to travel within and to Southland.
